The Hairpiece
Five women gather around a sixth who is trying on hair extensions. Three are close friends and each are offering their opinions. A fourth is observing the fun. All seem out for a good time. Their laughter first attracted my attention. They were gathered around a kiosk across the passageway. Her friends were edging on the woman trying the hair extensions. The sixth woman is the young kiosk attendant. She is trying to hold their attention long enough to close a sale. Possibly the friends were on a break from the nearby convention center. The noisy fun had attracted the woman on the right, who was just strolling by. I was sitting at a coffee shop in Horton Plaza, a large shopping mall in San Diego, California. My wife was on her own shopping spree; meanwhile I managed to sneak a series of photographs from which this painting was developed.
