The Boyfriend
We were walking along a street in Siena, Italy. Each side street and alley exposed interesting buildings, cul-de-sacs, and activities. Often, I take snapshot photos of such views, to use as prospective backgrounds in future paintings. Later, going thought my images, I found I had caught this couple in conversation. The man reminded me of the London "Spivs" of the 1950's. His shiny blue suit, the brown shoes, the greased down hair, the sun glasses, the cigarette in his hand, and his apparent domination over the woman. She seems almost frightened, yet somehow dependent upon him. The painting emphasizes these characteristics, and with the background simplified, leaves a lot to the imagination of the viewer.
